Recent rains in New South Wales, while welcome, have also exacerbated the ecological damage caused by the bushfires.

Thousands of fish are believed to be dead near Kempsey in the state's north, after ash saturated the Macleay River.

Scientists say there could be more mass fish kills as the storms and rain wash bushfire ash into waterways.
